Postoperative Lymphatic Drainage
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is recommended by plastic surgeons to accelerate the process of recovery. The sooner the swelling goes before the skin begins to adhere to new muscle, the faster recovery and better results.
The MLD is a gentle massage technique that does not traumatize the tissue, and promotes deflation. For this reason, you can start MLD massages as soon as the operation is performed, from 24 to 48 hours after surgery. The start time is decided by the plastic surgeon who performed the procedure. After the liposuction and other interventions where it is not convenient forearly mobilization of the skin, it may be necessary to delay the start until the end of 5 to 7 days.
The three main lymphatic drainage benefits are:
1. It stimulates the circulation of body fluids. Activates circulation and lymphatic and indirectly stimulates the blood circulation.
2. Immune system stimulation. The passage of lymph in the lymph nodes stimulates the immune system. Stimulation of lymph circulation activates the antigen / antibody and immune reactions.
3. It stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (relaxing and antispasmodic effect).
The Manual Lymph Drainage is a specific technique of manual activation of drainage and fluids from the tissues and lymph through the lymph vessels. This maneuver specifies acts on the connective tissue in the space from the deep layers of the skin to the muscular plane and all the elements that are contained in this area. Lymph is a clear or milky white liquid (intestinal lymph) that contains certain elements among them include a self-cells called lymphocytes.
